Average Jane Is Awake, Okay?

Today was a day of unusually rude awakenings.

It started in the wee hours of the morning. I awoke with the unwelcome feeling that the next time I moved my left leg, it was going to cramp. Of course, it did. I got a full-blown charley horse in my calf muscle that took several minutes of "Ow! Ow! Ow!" to let go.

I’ve been drinking a lot of water lately, so I’d guess my electrolyte balance is off. I’ll get a banana from the coffee shop downstairs when I get to work. A little potassium should help.

Once I managed to fall back asleep, the universe stepped up its campaign to get me out of bed. Our alarm system went off around 6:00 a.m. and vaulted us out of bed. It turned out that our kitchen window had come unlatched and must have shifted a teensy bit.

So I’m up now. What next?

My husband thought 6:00 AM was a good time to unload the dishwasher. Loudly. Guess I shouldn’t complain, if it’s getting done. But 6:00?
There’s nothing like a charley horse to interrupt a good night of sleep…

Growing up, My Dad used to get horrible Charley Horses. I remember waking up in the middle of the night to his excruciating screams… as I got older I was taught to massage them down from the ball they form. It was once in a great while but they were just painful to even look at. I have only had it happen twice in my life and it truly hurts.

A little secret for cramps in the calf. Pinch your upper lip, right at the filtrum. (that weird spot from your nose to the center of your mouth.) Pinch it hard for a count of 10. Your cramp often goes away. It’s a acupressure thing.
(see what I learn watching TV?)

Hey! I was awake too early Friday morning, too, due to a charley horse. It was my first in a very long time and it hurt like hell. Very frustrating to be on vacation, with my sleeping four year old in the next bed and to be wide awake…
