Average Jane’s Breakfast Shakes

IMGP2220 For the past couple of months, I've been having meal replacement shakes for breakfast. They replaced the PowerBars I'd been eating forever, and I think they're a lot more filling and definitely more nutritious.

I thought I'd share some of the "recipes" for my favorite varieties. They all start with:

8 ounces skim milk
2 scoops vanilla shake powder (use your favorite kind)
1/2 cup or so of ice

The other shake ingredients I keep on hand at all times include:

Frozen whole strawberries
Frozen peach slices
Frozen mixed berries and/or blueberries
Bananas (which I peel and freeze if we're not using them up fast enough)
Oatmeal (uncooked)
Peanut butter
Honey
Cinnamon

So far, my favorite combinations are:

  • Strawberry and banana
  • Peanut butter and banana (sometimes with oatmeal)
  • Peach, oatmeal and cinnamon (a touch of honey is nice, too)
  • Plain strawberry
  • Mixed berry and strawberry

I tried working with frozen cherries, but never ended up with anything I particularly liked.

When I add oatmeal, it's just a scant handful. I happen to have the old fashioned oats right now, which add a nice chewy texture. Instant oats would probably blend in more smoothly.

Do you have any shake varieties you recommend? Am I missing out by not getting a chocolate shake powder to play with? Let me know!

I have been making myself breakfast smoothies several times a week, I tried the chocolate protein powder but honestly its my least favorite…vanilla is still my fav… I do a bit of milk, ice, protein powder and a little bit of yogurt with frozen strawberries, frozen mango and banana’s if I have them…
I am wanting to get one of those “bullet” type of blenders though, I think it would be less work to clean up after.

I like to add yogurt too. Choc is nice to add either bananas or PB. Oatmeal would work. Get a little can just to play with!

I like to chew. Oatmeal it is. Every day, oatmeal.

I make the lowest cal, highest nutrition stuff with half cup greek yogurt, half frozenish banana in chunks, a bit o’ finely milled flaxseed, some flavored vitamin water, any variety of fresh cut up fruit, half cup or more of crushed ice, three splenda packets (since there is no heat, the chemical composition is not broken down in the splenda–that’s where the health concern is over that), and some hemp protein powder I get at Whole Foods. There’s a chocolate variety of the hemp protein powder as well. The shakes are yummy and filling. Mine almost fills a 32 oz. cup.
