  • Average Jane Goes to a Show

    Evil dead

Evil Dead The Musical was every bit as wonderful as I'd hoped. The Kansas City production was pretty homegrown (lots of the cast members listed shows at Worlds of Fun in their resumes), but it seemed fitting considering that the first movie in particular had only one professional actor (Bruce Campbell) in the cast.

The plot of the musical was a mashup of the first two movies with a quickly glossed-over moment of exposition encompassing Army of Darkness, leading into the AOD ending. With lots of singing and dancing and demon masks.

It had quite the libretto. Songs included, "Look Who's Evil Now," "What The Fuck Was That?", "All The Men In My Life Keep Getting Killed By Candarian Demons," and "Ode To An Accidental Stabbing."

The first three rows of the theater were designated as the "splatter zone," and the cast members made sure to spew fake blood there as often as possible.

If you're in KC, there are four shows left. For everyone else, I recommend watching out for a touring production. It's great fun.

  • Average Jane’s Life

I'm writing today to demonstrate that there's more to my existence than cats. But if you're interested in how Velcro is doing, I can tell you that she does seem to be improving daily.

So what else do I have going on?

Well, I'm in a bunch of book clubs, but my participation is pretty occasional in all but the most convenient one. We met last night to discuss Very Valentine and drink martinis. As usual, the martini drinking took precedence over the book discussion. Maybe I should have looked up those discussion questions yesterday…

I'm still doing my best to keep up with my favorite TV shows, although I never watch anything live anymore. The current list includes:

    • Lost
    • Burn Notice
    • Psych
    • Ghost Whisperer
    • Pawn Stars
    • American Pickers
    • Tool Academy (I'm ashamed of myself, but I cannot stop watching)

I know there are other good shows I should be watching, but I have a hard enough time keeping up as it is.

Then there's my band. We have a gig tomorrow night and a couple booked in March already. If anything interesting happens at tomorrow's show, I'll let you know.

Other than that, I spend all my free time surfing the 'net, occasionally cooking or baking, doing as little housework as possible, hanging out with friends or family, and doing yoga.

Ooh, and this weekend I'm going to Evil Dead – The Musical. I can't wait!

So what are you up to these days?

  • Average Jane’s Kitty Update

Velcro artistic This is mostly derived from my Facebook post on the same subject, but in case you were curious and you're not my Facebook friend for some reason (not that you couldn't be if you'd like to ask), here's what's up with my elderly kitteh:

We decided it was time to bring Velcro home last night. She clearly
feels much better and she's bright-eyed if not bushy-tailed. However,
she has some noticeable neurological symptoms – she's shaky and clumsy,
reminiscent of a cat recovering from anesthetic. We're doing our best to discourage her from using the stairs or jumping on the
    counter.

Unfortunately we have no definitive answers about her condition. If it
was caused by a stroke or metastasis of the cancer she had a few years
ago, there's nothing we can do about it anyway so I've chosen not to
pursue further diagnosis along those lines.

We're still waiting for some blood test results that might shed further
light and reveal something that is treatable. For now, we're going to
pamper her in the manner to which she is accustomed as long as she's
happy, eating, free of pain and able to get around.

Thanks for all of your well wishes. We're trying to remain optimistic.

  • Average Jane’s Poor Old Kitteh

I wondered why Velcro wasn't on her usual kitchen counter perch begging for food when I woke up this morning. I went upstairs to check my e-mail, read some blog feeds and play with Trillian and Dr. Jones until it was time to shower and get ready for my volunteer shift taking care of the adoptable cats at Petco.

As I was crossing through the kitchen, I heard Velcro meow from the living room. She was lying on the floor on a flattened shopping bag, which is unusual for her because she prefers the furniture. I picked her up gently and noticed that her fur felt moist. When I tried to stand her on her feet, her back legs collapsed beneath her.  She lay down, tucked herself into a tidy, upright position and looked up at me as if to ask what I was going to do to fix all this.

Well, so much for taking a shower. I threw on a random assortment of garments, put Velcro in a cat carrier that was still in the kitchen from Xena's routine vet visit a couple of days before, and took her to the emergency vet clinic conveniently located less than a mile away.

IMGP1100 Velcro is almost 18. She's a breast cancer survivor and over the past year or so she's gotten terribly skinny and her fur is clumpy and unkempt. She's completely deaf and her ears seem to bother her. Every time I walk by and see her sleeping, I stop to watch and make sure she's breathing because although she seems happy and energetic most of the time, I can't help but worry.

As I made my way to the vet, I was hoping against hope that today wouldn't be Velcro's last day with us.

When I walked in the door to the clinic, two vet techs swooped in immediately and took the carrier to the exam room while I filled out paperwork.

While I waited, I came to regret not having had breakfast or coffee earlier, so I ended up buying a Pop Tart from the vending machine.

Finally, the doctor called me in to talk about Velcro's condition. She didn't seem to have anything wrong with her back or hips, so she probably hadn't had a fall. She was dehydrated, so they were going to give her I.V. fluids and keep her overnight. They wanted to run blood tests to check her kidney and thyroid function. I'd just had those tests done sometime before Christmas, but apparently an elderly cat can undergo drastic changes fairly quickly.

The office staff showed me the estimate for services and asked if I were willing to pay 75% up front. Well, of course. That's what credit cards are for, right? I couldn't help thinking that if Velcro could have waited until Monday, I'd probably be paying about half that amount at my own vet, but what can you do?

I paid a visit to Velcro before I left and she seemed as happy to see me as always. The vet tech said she wouldn't stop purring during her examination, which is typical. Of course, cats purr when they're upset, so that's not necessarily as positive a sign as it might appear.

Now I'm just waiting to hear if the blood tests reveal anything actionable. The vet said that the I.V. fluids alone might very well perk her up. Let's hope so.

This is the hard part of being a pet owner, but I'm trying to stay hopeful. Velcro's a tough little thing and I'm betting on her to pull through once again.

Early Evening Update: Vet called and said Velcro's electrolyte balance was way off (potassium very low), so now that she's had fluids she's "climbing the bars of her cage." Yay! Also her blood sugar was quite low. They're still waiting on further blood test results, so no hard conclusions yet, but it's nice to know she seems better. I may go visit her this evening, weather permitting.

  • Average Jane vs. the Term Paper Sp@mmers

Lately my blog (among others) has become a magnet for an obnoxious group of sites that apparently sell plagiarized (plagiarizable?) term papers to students. They have actual humans, whom I envision working in a high-tech, third-world sweatshop, manually leaving comments and plugging in the correct CAPTCHA responses so that the links to their sites might get some search engine juice.

I have my blog set up so that each comment is e-mailed to me, so I can delete the sp@m comments and block the IP addresses immediately. However, because they're always on old posts, I imagine many bloggers may not notice them.

It's also occurred to me that because many of the comments reference the content of the post, part of the already unethical service these sites offer might include scraping blog feeds and selling the content as essays. I don't know of any way to check whether or not that's happened to my blog, but I certainly hope not.

As someone who was a huge procrastinator in college but still managed to write a ridiculous number of essays and reports all by herself, I find it appalling that any student would buy papers. It's especially stupid because it's so easy for a professor to find out, as whatladder reported recently. Lazy, unethical and thoughtless: there's the bottom of the next generation's barrel for you.

That's my latest rant. I promise I'll write about something more fun and positive next time.

  • Average Jane’s Germy Valentine’s Day

I knew this was coming. All week long I'd been around one sick person after another, both at work and at home. My husband has a full-blown Man Cold and there's obviously no way to avoid him completely.

On Saturday, I not only took a three-hour nap in the afternoon, but I cut my evening plans short, was asleep by 10:30 p.m. and slept until 8:30 a.m. Forty-some years of life have taught me that that level of sleep need is always a sign that I'm fighting something off.

As soon as I woke up this morning, I knew the cold had finally gotten me. One sinus is radiating pain in every direction so that I have a both a headache behind my eye and a toothache on that side.

Fortunately, my husband and I weren't planning on doing anything for Valentine's Day until tomorrow night anyway. Unfortunately, it's because I have band practice. Singing like this is going to be a real treat.

How's your Valentine's Day so far? Better than mine, I hope.

  • More Questions Answered by Average Jane

I'm happy to have inspired Cop's Wife to play along with the whole Q&A thing. Ask her a question, if you like.

Some more from my formspring account:

Describe a perfect day for you.

Here's a rather typical but still perfect day at home for me:

IM000885 After about ten hours of sleep, I wake up and meet a friend or two for breakfast somewhere that has wonderful coffee. After that, I go home and read for a while, with cats all around me. I do a bit of baking and prepare something tasty for lunch, which I eat while watching one of my favorite shows. If the weather is nice, I go out to the deck or front porch swing and read some more – or maybe even take a walk in my neighborhood. Once my husband wakes up, we hang out and chat for a while in the studio and play with the two upstairs cats, then select a good restaurant for dinner. Once we get home, we watch a couple more TV shows and then I get to bed no later than 11.

Were you a tomboy or a girly girl as a kid? by karlerikson

Way more of a tomboy. We lived on a farm so I helped with chores (feeding the horses and chickens, stacking bales of hay, etc.) and played outside a lot. I was also fond of climbing trees.

On the other hand, I enjoyed playing with Barbies, so there was some girly girl hidden in there, too.

Do you get excited about the Olympics? by angelchrys

No, I am not a sports person at all, so I'm barely aware of the Olympics when they're happening.

Here's a question for you: are you doing anything fun this weekend?

  • Average Jane Answers A Question

  • What Do You Want To Know About Average Jane?

Everyone has been playing around with formspring lately, so naturally I had to sign up.

If the other bloggers jumped off a bridge, would you jump off, too? Well…maybe.

So ask me some questions. I'll answer the fun ones here later in the week.

  • Average Jane’s Winter Blog Lull

There hasn't been much to report lately. This keeps happening:

    IMGP1839
And we're spending a lot of time dealing with him:

    IMGP1821
Don't let the adorableness fool you. Notice the open mouth? That's from the incessant gripe-y commentary. He also has a little problem with minding his own business:

    IMGP1812

    Jones 3
Trillian loves him, though. So that's good.

    Trillion & Jones

My husband and I did attend a very nice Super Bowl get-together at Cagey's last night. Rita and her family were there as well. As usual, the women chatted throughout the game and stopped to pay attention to the commercials. It was a good game, though.

So what are you doing to ride out the rest of this long winter?
