  • Average Jane’s Defective Kitty

This is an old photo of Dr. Jones in the sink, not one of him actively peeing, in case you were wondering.I knew there was a problem on Sunday morning when Dr. Jones jumped into the broken side of our double sink in the bathroom and assumed a very familiar position with an intent look on his face. Yes, the cat peed—just a little bit—right in front of me. I took it as a sign that he was going to need a trip to the vet on Monday.

I had friends over to play A Game of Thrones that day, so I was busy most of the morning and early afternoon making food and tidying up. Jones didn't enter into the picture again until my friend Tara set her purse on the floor and I caught the cat trying to pee in/on it.

He just got worse throughout the day. I had to shoo him out of the game box and by the evening he was simply standing in the middle of the kitchen floor straining and peeing where he stood.

When I looked up his symptoms online, I realized that if he had a true blockage we could have an emergency on our hands. So rather than wait until my vet opened on Monday ($$), I went ahead and took him to the emergency vet clinic. ($$$$)

There he received a diagnosis of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), which is kind of a catch-all description but boils down to a lifetime of special dietary needs to prevent crystals and stones in the cat's urine. The vet told me that it is very common in neutered male cats but also in human women, so there's a good deal of research being conducted on it.

While I sat in the waiting room, the vet emptied Jones' bladder and gave him some pain medication that zombified him pretty thoroughly. I put him in a kennel overnight with water and a litterbox and I'm pretty sure he spent most of the night standing and staring blankly through the bars.

The next morning he was doing much better. He doesn't mind the kennel, so it's a good place to put him when I feed him his special canned food. I got a big bag of the dry form of the prescription food and switched all the cats over immediately. The vet warned me that I'd have to limit the portions to keep the cats from getting fat, but it's better to have them all eating the same thing than to have to worry about Jones getting into some food that will make his symptoms return.

So now Dr. Jones is on an anti-spasmodic twice a day for a week, the special food forever, and I have more pain medicine that he doesn't seem to need. He seems to be back to his old self already, which is a huge relief.

I asked my friend who'd given me Jones as a kitten if there was any chance he was still under warranty since he doesn't turn two until this Friday. Nope. No refunds, no returns. I guess I'll have to get him to pay me back in purrs and snuggles. I wonder if he'd be willing to take on a part-time job?

  • Average Jane Works from Home

I was feeling under the weather yesterday morning, so I decided to stay home and work from the comfort of my living room.

Everyone else in the house slept the whole time.

    Jones
I thought it was funny that Dr. Jones crammed his big self onto his favorite toy to sleep. I think I need to buy a new carpet runner for the hallway to increase his floor sleeping options.

    Tobyandvelcro
Toby and Velvet made the most of the quiet time and zzz'ed out all morning and afternoon. I felt sleepy just looking at them.

It was a pleasant and productive working environment. Best of all, at the end of the day I got to walk into the next room and take a nap in lieu of driving home.

Today I'm feeling much better and I'm heading back to the office. At least I know I don't have to feel guilty about leaving the pets behind. They hardly noticed I was there.

  • Average Jane Wants To Help

Cat Proof Your Computer - Click to enlargeMy husband lets Trillian and Dr. Jones visit the studio for "field trips" away from the main part of the house. That's all well and good, except that Trillian gets a little overly enthusiastic about saying "hi" when I'm at my desk, which has resulted in at least once instance of a file on my desktop being renamed something along the lines of: s;lkjdffd;ljk.

However, it turns out there's a company that has it all thought out when it comes to computer backup needs, including cat-related ones.

SurDoc offers cloud storage for file protection, online access and sharing. They've given me a free 30GB account in exchange for writing this post and you can get one as well using the code CATPROOF. (Obviously you're welcome to get an account to use even if you're in no danger of cat-initiated data loss.)

They do automatic backups for PCs, and Mac users can do easy manual backups of vital information.

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty terrible about backups in general, even though I've been a computer user for decades and should know better.

Think about all of the cat photos I'd lose if something happened!

  • Average Jane’s Favorite New Pet Products

The BlogPaws Conference sponsors brought out the big guns this year when it came to new product releases. I've had time to use and evaluate many of the things I brought home, so I'd like to share my favorites.

    Sentry Calming Collars

CollarI've long documented the cat drama in our household perpetrated by Trillian and Xena. When the Sentry reps showed off their new line of pheromone-based collars and sprays designed to curb anxiety and bad behavior in cats and dogs, I was quite intrigued. They sent me home with one cat collar and one dog collar and later sent me another dog collar, some calming and "stop it" sprays and other miscellaneous related items.

I put a collar on Toby right before a vet visit and I really felt there was a huge difference in his anxiety behavior compared to his previous visit (which had been a nightmare). Trillian got the cat collar and it seemed to make her less fearfully aggressive toward Xena. Since then, we've purchased one for Xena as well, and I'm interested in seeing if it ratchets down her grouchiness level.

The most impressive result I saw with the calming collar was A Librarian's cat, Spike. I spent Independence Day at her house and was surprised to see Spike hanging out in a crowd of people. He is ordinarily a nervous wreck and has always gone off and hidden from company. The collar completely transformed him and I think I saw as much of him that day as I have over the past several years combined.

The collars last about 30 days, so Toby and Trillian will need to have theirs replaced soon. I'll definitely keep using them. Not only do they seem to make a significant difference in the animals' behavior, they smell quite nice (lavendar!) and they're rather pretty (purple for cats, aqua for dogs).

    Zero Odor

Pet-stain-removerThese guys had me with their first demo. They sprayed straight ammonia in a petri dish, let me smell it (ugh) and then sprayed their Litter Spray over it. Wow. In just a matter of seconds, the odor was almost completely gone.

I don't have any Litter Spray yet, but I used their Pet Stain Remover to clean all of the litter boxes and it did an amazing job. It is also better than any product I've tried (and believe me, I've tried just about everything) when it comes to getting urine odor out of my slate floor. It is now my go-to product for pet mess clean-ups in the house.

They also have some general household odor sprays. I gave my BlogPaws sample bottle to my husband to help him combat the odor of Stinky Musician in the studio (sweat, cigarette smoke, beer, etc.). It's nice because it has no perfume or other odor of its own.

Their product line is available at Bed Bath & Beyond, so I'll definitely be heading there for more when I run out.

    Rachael Ray Nutrish Dog Treats

Treats_cranberryIf I'd known how much Toby was going to enjoy the Oatmeal & Berries dog treats I brought back for him, I'd have snagged some more.

He gets a lot of treats every day because we use them as positive reinforcement for good potty behavior, so I liked the idea that these were all natural and low calorie. I thought the strong berry scent might not be his cup of tea, but he chows down on them eagerly. I'll be shopping for more soon.

    Pet Armor

Finally, I wanted to give Pet Armor a shout-out for being so blogger-friendly. We have indoor cats and the dog gets his flea and tick protection via his heartworm tablet because Italian Greyhounds are hyper-sensitive to topical medications, but I appreciated the cat flea protection samples I got from Pet Armor and so did my sister, who happily took them for use on her outdoor cats.

My cats love the comfy bed they sent me after the conference and I've placed it on our table so they can sit on it to look out the window during the day. Dr. Jones called dibs before it had been out of the box for five minutes.

    Jones_bed

I'm still making my way through some of the other items I received at the conference, so I may do additional reviews later. A big thanks to all of the sponsors who made it such a great event!

  • Average Jane Leaves for BlogPaws

Today's the day I get on a plane at the crack of dawn and head to Salt Lake City for BlogPaws 2012. This year, my friend Spyder is coming with me, so it's really going to be fun!

I'm not taking my laptop, so this will probably be my last post until Sunday or Monday. However, for anyone I meet at the conference, I'd like to introduce my animal family.

    IMG_1857
This is Toby. The fact that I have him at all can be directly attributed to BlogPaws 2011. He's a 9-year-old Italian Greyhound that I adopted after his original family gave him up, post-divorce. He enjoys chew sticks and accompanying me on my daily 5K walks through our neighborhood.

    IMG_1901
Dr. Jones is my only male cat. He spends a lot of time thinking of stuff to get into. Fortunately, he also spends a lot of time sleeping. He has a very fluffy belly that must be woozled regularly.

    IMG_2444
Trillian is my youngest female cat. She loves to be snuggled and petted, especially when she's away from her arch-nemesis, Xena, whom you'll meet shortly. If you work for my company's IT department, please pretend you never saw this photo. If you ever come over to my house to eat, please know that I keep lots of Lysol wipes on hand to disinfect the countertops and appliances.

    IMG_2445
Xena enjoys sunbathing, treats and constant access to the food dish, as you can see. She and Trillian spend their days establishing and defending vital strategic bases in the kitchen and living room. Xena is my husband's kitteh wife and she likes to dramatically fling herself into his arms.

    IMG_1940

Velvet is our oldest cat. I adopted her as a "buffer cat" between Xena and a very elderly cat we had at the time. Despite the fact that she's at least twelve years old, Velvet is the most playful cat in the household. I think she may even play with the dog when we're not looking.

So that's the gang I'm leaving behind for the long weekend. I'm looking forward to meeting all the pets that people actually bring with them to the conference, hanging out with all the friends I made last year and making some new friends.

  • Average Jane’s Barely Competent Predators

IMG_1814Last November, I was confronted with the evidence that we had a mouse problem in our house for the first time since we've lived there. I can't say I really did anything proactive about it, but you'd think that with four cats and a dog wandering about the premises, the solution would be pretty obvious.

Fast forward to last night. We'd gone over to leech off our friends' HBO subscription watch "Game of Thrones" with some friends and when we got home and walked into the kitchen, we could see that Dr. Jones was very engaged with something in the corner. I immediately suspected that he'd found a mouse, and a flick of the light switch confirmed it.

Meanwhile, all the activity got Xena and Velvet's attention as well. It wasn't long before all three cats gathered in the kitchen to, I assumed, make short work of the interloper.

Instead, they managed to let it escape behind the refrigerator.

There was no more sign of it for the rest of the evening, so I eventually went to bed…but only after carefully checking the sheets to make sure no one had left a mouse carcass "gift" there. Xena likes to bring her toys into our bed, so it was a valid concern.

When I woke up this morning, my husband told me that the cats had managed to kill the mouse during the night and he had handled the disposal. I appreciated that, especially since our division of labor back in the old days when we still had an outdoor cat was that I dealt with mammals and he cleaned up the dead birds.

Who knows how many more mice are lurking in our walls and cupboards, but at least the cats have gotten the hang of their varmint killing role. If the critters know what's good for them, they'll leave now. Ish.

  • Average Jane and Cat Hair Gene Simmons

You may recall last year when I began embracing my crazy cat lady destiny by accepting a free FURminator and sculpting my cats' fur into little fuzzy creatures. At the end of that post I promised no more cat fur sculptures, but guess what…I LIED! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

This year they upped the ante with a celebrity cat fur sculpture theme and I couldn't resist participating again. Also, because I'm already stocked up on FURminators, I'm going to give one away on this very blog post, if you can be patient enough to read to the end.

So without further ado, here is my rendition of Gene Simmons from KISS, brought to life via the media of free-range egg, Sharpie, one of my old belts, and black cat fur:

My cat fur and egg sculpture of Gene Simmons

I know it's cheating to have him wearing sunglasses, but eyes are hard to draw. See also: my artistic choice not to have him in stage makeup or with his tongue sticking out. Naturally, one of my fellow artistes (who ended up being a contest finalist) had to get all show-offy and make this:

Gene Simmons made almost entirely of cat fur

Also show-offy (and another finalist), Mr. Scrubby, who claims to have built Conan O'Brien out of his own fur, despite his obvious lack of opposable thumbs. I think his moms helped.

Cat fur Conan O'Brien and Mr. Scrubby

You can check out the entire gallery on Facebook and vote for your favorite finalist.

So on to the giveaway. I have for you, the Large Cat Short Hair deShedding Tool, a $50.99 value.

    Furminator
They didn't ask me to say this, but these things are amazing! I especially love that little blue flange you see there, because it serves to push the fur off the teeth of the comb and into the trash. If you've ever dealt with staticky hair flying everywhere while grooming a cat with a regular brush or comb, you'll know this is an incredibly handy and desirable feature.

To win, leave a comment on this post telling me about the pet you have that sheds the most. I'll pick a random winner on Friday, April 27th, which makes perfect sense because it's National Hairball Awareness Day. Make sure you include a valid email address so I can contact you if you're selected.

UPDATE: Contest is now closed. See winner here.

Disclosure: Prize was provided to me at no charge by FURMinator, but I will be paying for shipping to prize winner. I'm not a finalist for the big prize (a $1,000 donation to a cat-related animal charity), but I am eligible for a $150 Visa gift card drawing as part of this program.

  • Average Jane’s February Photo Challenge Day 21: A Fave Photo of You

    Security_sm

This photo was taken when I was in my late teens or very early twenties, which shows you that I've been a fan of black cats since way back when. I've posted it on my blog before—you can read more about it here

  • Average Jane’s February Photo Challenge Day 11: Makes You Happy

    IMG_1928
Of course this was going to be a pet photo.

I spent most of today ferrying cats all over town for my rescue group. When I got home, I was greeted with the sight of Dr. Jones and Toby sharing the couch in their usual way. Of course, they'd both be a lot warmer if they'd just cuddle together, but they haven't reached that stage yet.

Two of my other sources of feline happiness never appear in the same room together and the third was off somewhere else in the house, so I had to take what I could get.

If you're wondering where my husband falls in all of this, he was either asleep or having band practice every time I was home. But yes, he definitely makes me happy as well.
