  • Average Jane Walks

    IMG_0144

Today was the fifth day in a row that I've walked five kilometers or more. On Saturday morning I walked the Lung Hill 5k at Liberty Memorial in memory of my mother, who died of lung cancer in 1998.

I'm really starting to notice physical changes from all the walking, one of which is that I'm really tired. Or maybe that's just the time change. I'm also looking thinner and fitter, so that's a plus.

I'm heading to bed before 10 p.m. tonight and I'm skipping walking tomorrow. Sometimes laziness is its own reward.

  • Average Jane’s Unexpected Blog Visitors

Doorbell One of my friends got famous this week. Nerdy Apple Bottom wrote an amazing post that has gotten the country's attention and garnered well over a million views and had more than 21,000 comments when I checked just now.

What does that have to do with me? Well, since we're real-life book club buddies, Average Jane is one of the blogs on her blogroll. And it starts with "A." So I've been getting a ridiculous number of visitors that I wasn't prepared for.

Seriously, it's like hundreds of people a day started showing up at my house while I was sitting in my bathrobe with dirty dishes piled all over the counters. Not to beat the metaphor to death, but I'm not really prepared to stash all the dishes in the oven and quickly change my clothes. My blog is what it is, so I hope you can find something enjoyable about it.

As I wrote in my intro to last night's post, new visitors are best off just exploring the recipes. Thanksgiving is my highest trafficked time of year for a reason. Beyond that, I hope you like cats, home improvement, rock bands and social media, because that's pretty much what you'll find here.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  • Average Jane Stays Home

If you're visiting from Nerdy Apple Bottom's blog–welcome! You won't find anything quite as groundbreaking here, but I recommend that you browse my recipes. Thanksgiving is coming up and I have some good stuff for you.

    * * *

As usual, I'm reaching the end of the year with a ton of unused vacation time that I have to burn through or lose. Thus, I have this entire week off from work–except that I can't stop myself from checking my e-mail and answering work-related questions.

Aside from the road trip I've already discussed at length, here's what I've packed into my vacation week so far:

    • An oil change, which also ended up including a new battery, a change of brake fluid and a new air filter.
    • One morning walk so far. I have another one on the calendar tomorrow.
    • Lunch and shopping in Lawrence, Kansas, with my sister and aunt.
    • Two doctors' appointments.
    • Check-ups and vaccinations for Trillian and Velvet.
    • Laundry. Lots of laundry.
    • Two trips to different grocery stores.
    • Finally watched "The Walking Dead," which gave me nightmares, but in a good way.
    • Numerous futile attempts to pare down my Google Reader bounty.
    • A jam with my former guitarist and some of his friends.
    • A couple of restaurant meals with my husband.

Clearly I am not good at this whole "vacation" thing.

  • Average Jane’s Favorite Cleaning Product

I ran across a vintage Chore Girl ad on J-Walk Blog the other day. As the post mentions, the product name was later changed to Chore Boy. My aunt refers to it as "Chore Person."

Goldenfleece I don't use the regular Chore Boy scrubbers, but the brand also produces Golden Fleece, which has been my dishwashing scouring product of choice for years.

Golden Fleece can be a little difficult to track down in stores these days, so I bought a half case of them in 1998. Last week, I opened my last box from that case, so clearly I get a lot of use out of them.

I ran across a site that sells a full case for $20.28. That might be enough to last me the rest of my life.

By the way, I'm doing NaBloPoMo again: a blog post a day throughout November. It'll be my fifth year, so you can look forward to many more posts about things like common cleaning supplies and other mundanity. You're welcome!

  • Average Jane’s Home Energy Audit

We completed our $100 home energy audit as the first step in the Efficiency Kansas program. It'll be a couple of weeks before we get our report, but we're hoping to take advantage of the associated loan program so we can make a few improvements before winter sets in.

The audit was conducted by my friend Mary English from Small Step Energy Solutions. She also does a killer presentation of An Inconvenient Truth, if you're ever looking for a speaker on that topic.

The process was quite comprehensive and I'd be lying if I said I knew what she was doing at each juncture, but the coolest part (literally and figuratively) was when she installed a blower door over our front door and used an infrared camera to see where the house was particularly drafty.

    IMGP2257

    IMGP2258

There is a LOT that needs to be done to make our house more airtight. The attic has about 2" of insulation where it should have 18". That's probably what we'll address first. Unfortunately, Mary said we have a lot of junk up there: old construction debris, a chair, etc., that should really be cleaned out first. I guess we'll see what can be done.

The basement is another supremely problematic area. Of the six basement windows, two are covered up with insulation and plywood and the rest copiously leak cold air. Two of them are behind a wall, but no one bothered to seal them up first, so the whole wall reads cold on the infrared monitor. I'd like to have them all replaced with glass block windows, but that may have to happen later on.

There are some things I can deal with myself. There's a drafty crack where the kitchen wall and ceiling meet that I can caulk. We could use some caulk around most of our window frames, too. I also need to do some taping and mudding of the raw sheetrock in the studio's utility closet. Otherwise, air comes in freely through the open sheetrock joints.

One thing I thought I'd already taken care of is our fireplace flue. Last year I stuffed some insulation in there, which cut back the amount of air we'd been getting down the chimney. It turns out there's still a huge amount of air coming down the chimney, so I'm going to look into plugging it more securely.

It turns out that our storm windows, as old and ugly as most of them are, do a pretty good job. If the home builders had only insulated around the window frames better, we'd be doing pretty well.

I wasn't surprised that our house is poorly sealed and insulated. It was built around 1939 and it's had two or three additions since then. Now that I know exactly what I'm dealing with, I'm ready to knock out the problems one by one.

If you see me at Lowe's with a cart full of cans of expanding foam and tubes of caulk, you'll know why.

  • Average Jane Saves Money

Money Every now and then I look around and realize that I need to make some changes. (CLEAN ALL THE THINGS, as it were.) Now that I finally have my home office mostly cleaned out, the things that have been plaguing me the most are mostly financial.

In the interest of getting my budget under control, I recently refinanced my mortgage. Now it's down to 15 years and 4% interest. Woohoo! Best of all, the payments are pretty much the same as they were when I still had 23 years left at 5.75%.

Today I'm taking the first step toward addressing the atrociously high electric bills we had all summer. I'm having a home energy audit done by my friend Mary's company, Small Step Energy Solutions. I'm looking forward to pinpointing the worst sources of energy loss in our house so I can start fixing them in a logical order.

As part of the audit, I printed out my gas and electric bills for the past couple of years and was dismayed (but not surprised) to see that in the last 12 months I've paid $800 more for electricity than I did in the previous 12 months. And it's not just that the rates are higher; we're using more electricity for some reason. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we can determine why.

Finally, I was proud of myself over the weekend because I managed to replace a headlight bulb on my car all by myself. I say "managed" because I couldn't figure out how to do it on my first try. The next day I tried again in better light and succeeded in loosening the clip that was giving me trouble the first time around.

I'm always inclined toward do-it-yourself projects, but I sometimes overlook some of the obvious ones. Heck, maybe I'll even insulate my own attic after the energy audit results come back. Maybe.

  • Average Jane Does A Bunch of Stuff

Really, the title of this post should be the name of this blog. Oh, the relentless mundanity…

I'm starting to overschedule myself again. Just since my last post I've gone to a birthday dinner, attended an awards banquet, volunteered at a pancake breakfast, attended a wedding and reception, handled my weekly cat volunteering duties and gone to the zoo with Cagey and Team Chaos. And worked all day every weekday, of course.

Here are a couple of my zoo photos, carefully utilizing my patented Blur-O-Vision photography technique. (I might need a new camera…or perhaps a tripod.)

    Monkey
Adorable squirrel monkey. I believe the world needs more yellow-furred mammals.

    Squirrel
Exotic-looking squirrels. I think if all squirrels looked this cool, we'd like them more.

GIVEAWAY: On my other blog, I'm giving away a $25 Dress Barn gift card. You have until Friday to enter, so leave a comment if you're interested. Usual disclaimer: the gift card was provided to me at no charge by Dress Barn.

That's all I've got for you today. Let me get back to you after I've gotten a reasonable amount of sleep.

  • Average Jane’s Weekend of Work

Wow, what a weekend! I woke up way too early on Friday and spent the morning loading up my iPod and packing up painting accessories for my niece and nephew's surprise room makeovers.

When I got to my sister's house, she was already packing up toys and moving furniture toward the middle of each kid's room. Here's the "before" shot of my niece's room:

    IMGP2235
This is the yellow paint that still adorns my painting shirt.

She's ten, so she was wanting something less childish.

My five-year-old nephew's room started out looking like this:

    IMGP2232
The wallpaper border had a Western theme with horses, cowboy boots, cacti, etc.

I started Friday's work day removing wall anchors and spackling holes in both kids' walls. Then we made our hardware store shopping list and went to buy paint and supplies. Once we got back from the store, we had a quick lunch out on the back deck.

At some point, we decided that I would paint my nephew's room and my sister would handle my niece's room, so I hit all my spackle holes with primer and laid out the drop cloths.

We had to stop so my sister could teach a yoga class at 5:45 p.m., but that was fine because we were both running out of steam by then. We picked up a pizza on the way home, had dinner while watching an episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," then each got one coat of paint or primer on the lower half of our respective rooms.

I used my Wagner Paintmate roller, which suctions paint into its hollow handle and feeds it through holes in the roller cover. It is SO much faster than a regular roller and I think it's less messy, too. Unfortunately, the time you save painting goes into cleaning the thing, but I still love it.

We crashed early on Friday and slept until about 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. After a needlessly lengthy pancake breakfast fundraiser for my niece's soccer team, we went home and started getting serious about covering the rooms with paint. We had all our coats completed by the time we had to stop and go to a friend's house for a game night.

After a rollicking evening of Taboo and Balderdash (and perhaps one margarita too many), we headed back to my sister's house and turned in for the night. I would have slept a lot better if her cat, Hutch, hadn't decided to come up and bite my face at 4:30 a.m.

Sunday was devoted to putting the rooms back in order. We peeled off all the tape, arranged the furniture, put on the new bedding, put up the shelves and curtains, and applied vinyl artwork to the walls of both rooms. Then we had to clean up the mess we'd left all throughout the house.

Here's how my niece's room turned out:

    IMGP2244
    IMGP2245
It's a nice, contemporary style that she can enjoy into her teens.

My nephew's new room has a rock star theme:

    IMGP2252
    IMGP2250
As you might be able to guess, we decided to paint over the wallpaper border rather than try to remove it. I think it came out really great.

My brother-in-law had taken the kids to Oklahoma for the weekend and he delayed his return to make sure my sister and I would be back from her 4:30 p.m. yoga class for the big reveal. When they got home, my sister and I went upstairs with my niece and flung open her room door. She was so excited and thrilled that she was almost jumping up and down. I'm guessing she didn't get a lot of sleep last night (unless the paint fumes took her down).

We called my nephew up to see his sister's room and he was suitably impressed even though he really just wanted to watch TV. His door was shut and he started to head into his room. My sister said, "What do you think is going on in there?"

He opened the door and said, "Whoa!"

We pointed out some of the details and he thanked my sister for his new room, then headed downstairs to get his Spongebob fix after about a minute. Hey, he's five.

Today is my last vacation day from work and I'm still in labor mode. I've thoroughly vacuumed my office, the studio and the hallway, washed dishes, done some laundry and I'm about to tackle sweeping and mopping the basement floor. I need to learn how to do this "vacation" thing better.

    So how was your weekend?

  • Average Jane Breaks Out Her Painting Shirt

I'm taking a four-day weekend and spending three days at my sister's house helping her redecorate my niece and nephew's bedrooms while they're visiting their grandparents out of town. Thus, it was time to get out my trusty painting shirt.

    IMGP2230
This shirt is an ever-evolving record of every room I've painted in the past decade or so, including my:

    • Kitchen (verdigris)
    • Living room (brownish purple with white trim)
    • Half bath (moss brown with brick trim)
    • Dressing room (silver sage with white trim)
    • Full bath (turquoise)
    • Hallway (chocolate milk)

It also has paint splotches from previous jobs for my sister:

    • Her yoga studio (chartreuse)
    • My niece's bedroom (yellow)

As a special bonus, the area around the collar bears witness to the period when I was dyeing my own hair blue and also dark brown.

I'll be adding a lovely variety of paint colors over the weekend: blue, brown, red, grey and black.

Now I just need to figure out which jeans I'll be turning into my new painting jeans…

  • Average Jane Gets a Nerdtastic Surprise

If you've been reading my blog for any length of time, you'd know that I'm fond of science fiction, with a long-standing affection for Dr. Who. You would also know that I love cooking and baking.

Well, almost nobody has been reading my blog longer than Keith. We've gotten to be great blog buddies over the years and occasionally send one another little packages from our respective countries.

Imagine my delight when I opened my mail today and found these:

    IMGP2224
Your eyes don't deceive you, they're Dalek cookie cutters!

I can hardly wait to make and decorate a batch for my friends and family to exterminate. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

In case Keith – or anyone else – is wondering if I truly enjoy making cut-out cookies, allow me to show you the drawer in which they are currently residing:

    IMGP2228
Oh yeah, this is going to be fun!

    Thanks, Keith!
