    Be-awesome

I'm dipping a toe back into blogging, inspired by Bossy, who promises a relaunch soon. I'll try to get more creative going forward, but this meme seemed like a decent way to ease back in.

    1. Do you like bleu cheese? I like one particular appetizer that consists of freshly made potato chips topped with melted Maytag bleu cheese. Otherwise, not really.
    2. Coke or Pepsi? Jack and Coke if I'm feeling thrifty; Crown and Coke to be fancy. I don't really drink soda by itself anymore.
    3. Do you own a gun? We have them in the household, but I don't personally own one.
    4. What flavor Kool-aid? Cherry or black cherry
    5. What do you think of hot dogs? I always liked them despite everything, and now that I'm a vegetarian I wish I could find a good veggie version.
    6. Favorite TV show? We've been binge watching Supernatural on Netflix (as of this week, we're at the beginning of season 8 out of 13 and counting). It's my favorite right now because I'm so immersed.
    7. Favorite movie? Currently it's Wonder Woman. I'd see it again any time.
    8. What do you drink in the morning? Black coffee
    9. Can you do a pushup? I can do a pushup, but I think I'd need to step up my yoga practice to be able to do multiple pushups.
    10. Favorite jewelry? My Superhero Designs necklaces. (I have Grass & Sky and Joy)
    11. Favorite hobby? Baking
    12. Do you have A.D.D.? I believe they call it ADHD in adults. Squirrel!
    13. Do you wear glasses? Yes! I just got my first pair of bifocals and they've changed my life for the better.
    14. Favorite cartoon character? The Tick
    15. Three things I did yesterday? Ate quiche, played with kittens, and got together with friends.
    16. Three things you drink regularly? I feel like we've covered a lot of this already, but I also drink a lot of water and I'm a fan of microbrewed beer.
    17. Current dislike? The patriarchy and all that entails.
    18. Favorite place to go? I love hanging out at Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters. Great coffee and food and a really comfortable atmosphere.
    19. How did you bring in the New Year? At home, I think? I really don't remember.
    20. Where would you like to go? I'd love to visit the U.K.
    21. Favorite color? Purple
    22. Do you like sleeping on satin sheets? I'm going to assume no. Sounds cold and slide-y.
    23. Can you whistle? Not particularly well, but kinda.
    24. Where are you now? Sitting in my favorite living room chair.
    25. Would you be a pirate? I lean too much toward Lawful Good for that.
    26. Favorite food? Pizza. I would eat some variety of pizza every single day if the opportunity presented itself (and it often does).
    27. Last thing that made you laugh? Friends
    28. Favorite animal? Other than my cats and dog, definitely the capybara
    29. Most recent injury? A painful mystery bruise on one hip.
    30. How many TVs are in your house? Just one big one.
    31. Worst pain ever? It's a toss-up between kidney stone and diverticulitis flareup.
    32. Do you like to dance? Yes, but I'm not a very good dancer.
    33. Are your parents still alive? My dad is.
    34. Do you love life? As opposed to the alternative, sure. I could stand to cultivate more moment-by-moment joy, though.

And that's that. I'm hoping to get back into daily posts each weekday morning as a writing warmup. That's how I started blogging and it seems like a good way to get back into it.

I'm not sure if anyone's still around to read this, but I guess we'll find out!

  • Average Jane Does A Meme

I'd write about something new except that I'm a week into a bad cold and I don't have the energy.

So instead, I'll spend a little more time revisiting 2011 with this meme I picked up at 3 o'Clock A.M. It's the last line of the last post of each month from the previous year. Ready?

January - I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll have some wonderful things to talk about.

February - Here's hoping that spring is a little easier to bear.

March - I know it'll take some work, but I think it'll be well worth it!

April - No more sculptures, though. I promise.

May - For now, I'm just glad to have gotten this far.

June - Do you have any big summer vacation plans?

July - It was exactly the kind of vacation I needed.

August - So the storm actually did me a favor, albeit a rather expensive favor.

September - Next time I do a video, I'm going to fix myself up a little first.

    October - Man, I'm tired.

November - Thanks for your patience!

December - Looking forward to an even better 2012!

Hmm. Not the most auspicious group of sentences to start the new year, but there you have it.

Apparently one of my New Year's resolutions needs to be "Learn to end your posts better."

  • Average Jane’s Accent Vlog

I've been meaning to do this meme since it first popped up earlier this year (or was it last year) and I finally took a couple of minutes to record myself talking this evening.

My accent is unusual for someone who has lived in the Kansas City, Missouri area since birth. My mom's side of the family was from South Dakota (and she had some Chicago influence growing up) and my dad is the son of Swedish immigrants. I grew up on the outskirts of town, mostly around my own family, so they had much more of an impact on my pronunciation than the "locals."

Say the following words: Aunt, route, wash, oil, theatre, iron, salmon, caramel, fire, water, sure, data, ruin, crayon, toilet, New Orleans, pecan, both, again, probably, spitting image, Alabama, lawyer, coupon, mayonnaise, syrup, pajamas, caught

    And answer these questions:

What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?

What is the bug that curls into a ball when you touch it?

What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?

What do you call gym shoes?

What do you say to address a group of people?

What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?

What do you call your grandparents?

What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?

What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?

What is the thing you use to change the TV channel?

(Note: Damn, I have smeary eye makeup and dark circles! Next time I do a video, I'm going to fix myself up a little first.)

  • 30 Things About Average Jane

It's been a while since I did a meme, so I figured why not? I got this from Carmen at Mom to the Screaming Masses, who reports that she saw it at Avitable, Barking Mad and Headless Mom.

    30 Questions:

    1. It's 2AM and you are not home. You are more than likely:
At IHOP, Waffle House or some other late-night restaurant having breakfast with my band after a gig.

    2. What's the last thing you spent more than $100 on?
Haircut and color (went over $100 with tip)

    3. What do your bank checks look like?
They look sort of like money or cashiers' checks.

    4. Where did the shirt you are currently wearing come from?
Macy's – it's one of the ones I bought when I went shopping with my sister a while back.

    5. Name something that will be on your Christmas wish list:
I'd take anything on my Amazon list (unless someone wanted to get me something crazy like an iPad)

    6. What color is your toothbrush?
White and blue, I think. I just opened a new one.

    7. Name something you collect and tell us about it.
Faux copper Jell-o molds. I don't actually collect them anymore because I've gotten every design ever made in the '50s and '60s that I wanted, but the ones I do have are displayed on all my kitchen walls.

    8. Last restaurant you ate at. Who were you with? How was it?
I went to Village Inn with my sister, niece and nephew last night. It was pretty decent – I had pancakes, bacon and scrambled egg.

    9. Who was the last person you bought a birthday card for?
I don't remember. I bought my cousin an engagement card recently – does that count?

    10. What is your worst bad habit?
Procrastination. I know that getting things over with is the best way to live life, but I can't seem to keep it up.

    11. Name a magazine to which you subscribe?
Right now my only three subscriptions are Archaeology, Mental Floss and Cabinet.

    12. Your favorite pizza toppings?
I like pizza with "everything": sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, onions, green peppers and black olives.

    13. Whose number were you looking up the last time you used a phone book?
I have no idea – it's been way too long.

    14. Other than family, who is the person that you love most?
I agree with Carmen: this is a dumb question.

    15. What is the last thing you cooked?
I baked a rum cake last night to take to a party tonight.

    16. Name something you wouldn't want to buy used?
    A mattress

    17. Which shoe do you put on first?
    I've never noticed.

    18. What is the last thing you remember losing?
I lost my last iPod Shuffle. I'm convinced that it's kicking around under the seat of my car or somewhere like that, but I've never actually seen it again.

    19. What is the ugliest piece of furniture in your house?
We've pretty well de-uglified our home furnishing selection. I suppose you could say that the raw wood shelves in my dressing room are kind of ugly.

    20. Last thing you bought and ended up returning?
A dress from ModCloth that I loved, but was just too small (and not available in a larger size)

    21. What perfume/cologne do you wear? If none, why?
I don't wear scent very often, but my two staples are Fresh Sugar Lemon and Marc Jacobs Essence.

    22. Your favorite board game?
I'm overdue for a rousing game of Battlestar Galactica.

    23. What was the last board game you played?
    Zombie State

    24. Where did your vehicle come from?
Frank Ancona Honda in Olathe, Ks.

    25. If a movie was made about your life what would the theme song be?
Sisters Are Doing it for Themselves by the Eurythmics.

    26. You're sad, who can cheer you up easily?
    Any of my cats.

    27. What was the color of the bridesmaid dresses of the last wedding you went to?
I don't remember. It's been a number of years since I last attended a wedding.

    28. What house cleaning chore do you hate to do the most?
    Anything toilet-related.

    29. What is your favorite way to eat chicken?
Chicken fingers with a variety of hot sauces

    30. It is your birthday. You hope the cake is?
A Baskin-Robbins ice cream cake involving chocolate.

  • What Do You Want To Know About Average Jane?

Everyone has been playing around with formspring lately, so naturally I had to sign up.

If the other bloggers jumped off a bridge, would you jump off, too? Well…maybe.

So ask me some questions. I'll answer the fun ones here later in the week.

  • Average Jane’s Great Interview Experiment Part II

As you may remember, I met and interviewed the delightful Natalie as my first part of Neil Kramer's Great Interview Experiment last month. I never heard from the person who was supposed to interview me but that was obviously fate stepping in because Neil assigned me a new interviewer, Erica, who turned out to be an alternate reality version of me, only she's from Texas and has three kids.

We thought it would be fun to interview each other, so she set up a shared Google Document and we had a day of fun back-and-forth while we discovered all the things we had in common. In fact, she has formally proposed marriage to me now, so I just need to work out a few details with my existing husband, then I'll have the almost-doppelganger I've always wanted and the cats will feel like every day is a carnival.

    Here's our interview:

    EM: Erica, free fringes
    AJ:
    me, Average Jane

    * * *

EM: You've been blogging regularly since 2004 according to your archives at averagejane.
What are the main differences in the online community you discovered
when you first started and the online community you've found yourself
    in today?

AJ: I was the first of my real life friends to
start a blog, so my early online community was largely made up of
web-savvy people I already knew along with some random readers who
found me via occasional front page features on Typepad and links from
larger blogs such as J-Walk. Since then I've gained a lot of readers by participating in the BlogHer community (actually, my long-time friend Rita,
who started blogging not long after I did, now works for BlogHer). In
recent years, Facebook, Twitter and my local social media club have all
done an enormous amount to expand my blog's reach as well as introduce
me to lots of new people. So to answer the essence of your question, my
online community is now significantly larger and quite a bit closer,
now that we have so many different touch points.

    AJ: A
question for you: You seem to blog pretty openly about your life, but
of course we all set limits. What kinds of things do you hold back from
    blogging about?

EM: I've always had this kind of
dichotomous rep of being halfway open, halfway public. People feel very
comfortable around me once they get to know me, but for most people, it
takes a very long time to get to know me. I share, but only what I want
people to know. On my blog, my largest mission is to help people
understand that no matter how fucked up they feel, someone else is
commensurately fucked up while making life work with what she has. I
don't share details about my extended family, especially about my
parents. They get basic parental descriptions. I don't use names except
for my kids who have signed all kinds of waivers and love seeing their
names in print as Mommy is writing about their knuckleheadedness. I'm
    still searching our Internet archives
for the post Q wrote about Jon Alex unknowingly using my Vagisil to
brush his teeth. He numbed his lips and gums for more than an hour.
That was too funny to keep secret.

I'm impressed that she's willing to share the occasional "warts and all" post. I sometimes find myself posting such a sunny, Technicolor version of events that I feel like a big, fat liar.

EM: I'd like to go back
to the subject of your online community for a second. I just don't do
groups although I fantasize about having large social networks, parties
to attend, brunches to brunch, yet I get hives with each new Facebook
friend request. What overwhelms you as your social network grows?

This is where she asks me to marry her, and I am embarrassed to say that I got caught up in my answer to her interview question and failed to respond to the proposal.

    AJ: There are several
overwhelming things about my social network and it is indeed so large
now–particularly on Twitter–that I lose track of whether I've met
certain people in real life or not. My general rule for Facebook is that I have
to have met you in person at least once before I'll add you. Yet I
still have 357 Facebook friends, which gives you an idea of just how
much networking I do. I don't generally block anyone on Twitter except
for porn spammers, but I am not in the habit of reviewing my followers
very often these days, so often I won't follow someone back unless they
@ me or ask me in person.

The truly overwhelming thing about my
social network is that I am constantly turning down invitations to
things. Since I don't have kids, I have a pretty good amount of free
time and I'm not fond of sitting around at home. Still, it's gotten to
the point where I sometimes have more than one social event to attend
on a given weekday evening, and that's just too much. My husband is
starting to complain that I'm not spending enough time with him, so I'm
doing my best to cut back.

AJ: And, yes, I noticed how
much we have in common, which leads me to my next question: How are you
feeling about being in your 40s? Where's your balance point between the
positive aspects of maturing and growing into your self, and the
negatives of being concerned about aging?

EM: First let me say I am taking your silence on the marriage proposal as a maybe.

    This
will sound weird, but I never thought I'd make it to 40. I'm one of
those people who is surprised the house didn't burn to the ground while
I was on vacation and that I wasn't fatally sideswiped during a lane
change on the way home. Now that I'm a year past 40, I've stopped
counting because it seems like a dream, like it's not really happening.
I feel no more than 32, 33. So the positive aspects are certainly that
I've made it this far and genetically should have about 40 more to go.
I am concerned about aging not as a negative, mainly because that will
mean my kids will also be older and more mature, and I won't have to
drive everybody to every single errand and activity. My balance point
lies somewhere between a much higher self-awareness, like working on my
fixable faults, and whether or not I'll color my hair when I'm 60.

Yes, you should color your hair when you're 60! Never give up!

    EM:
Rapid fire answers: Stevie or Janis? Candied or caramel?
Flannel or flimsy? Codeine or morphine? Seaside or town square? Circus
or carnival? Roma or cherry? Long or short? Walk or ride? Kiss or tell?

    AJ:
How rude of me to fail to respond to your proposal! I could definitely
use a wife like me. The husband's skill set is a good adjunct to mine,
but I really need another me in the household to get things done.

Stevie. Caramel. Flannel. Codeine. Town square (mostly because I've
grown up landlocked and don't know what I'm missing with seaside).
Circus (except for lingering worry about the welfare of the animals).
Roma. Long. Ride (lazy, I know). Neither kiss nor tell at this point.

EM: Celeste, you grout, you sheetrock, you cook,
you rock out in a band. You party at BlogHer. I'm nowhere near a wife
like you. I was hoping you could use a baby mama who starts drinking at
kickoff on NFL Sundays and is asleep by halftime. The kids will be in
charge of taking your cats out for piggyback rides and Slurpees.

To be honest, I only know how to patch sheetrock. I think I can figure out how to hang sheetrock, too, but I haven't tried it yet. I, too, am a fan of the Sunday at halftime afternoon nap. I can't wait to see how the cats respond to piggyback rides and Slurpees.

AJ: In keeping with the rapid fire portion of our interview: Cats
or dogs? Who or Zeppelin? Pie or cake? Wine or beer? Vegas or NYC? TV
or theater? Donate or volunteer? Hug or handshake? Penny wise or pound
    foolish?

EM: As pets, neither. As headaches, both. Who. Mmmmmmm pie. And cake.
Vodka. New York. TV now, theatre before. Burned out on volunteering, so
check-writer. Don't touch me. Money wisdom is not my strong suit.

See, she is my long-lost sister! Ask anyone – I love me some martinis and desserts, and am a notorious non-hugger. Plus I haven't balanced my checkbook in literally 15 years.

  • Average Jane Interviews Natalie from The Bobby Pin

I'm taking part in Neil Kramer's Citizen of the Month Great Interview Experiment 2009 and my interview subject is Natalie from The Bobby Pin. It was fun reading through her archives and coming up with some questions for her.

    1. What's your favorite thing about being married? The security. Coming home everyday to my best friend and waking up next to him. That feeling — it is magic, comfort and fun all and the same time and it holds me over when days are hard.
    2. What's one activity you enjoy that your husband just doesn't get? Twitter! But I signed him up for Facebook a few years ago and now he's the champion of Tetris. So it's only a matter of time.
    3. You write about marketing quite a bit. Have you considering starting a work-oriented blog? Yes and no – great answer right? I am transitioning my marketing thoughts to Posterous to have a professional presence online, but The Bobby Pin is my main focus.
    4. How is your New Year's Resolution list coming along? Great in some areas, horrible in others. I think it helped to be concrete this year. I have excelled in at least one area of each of the categories, which is good for me. I have cooked a lot this year and improved my domestic skills. Professionally, I have definitely thickened up the Rolodex this year and it is with people I consider friends, not just contacts. Spiritually, I have gone to the temple almost monthly since July. That is a good thing.
    5. If you had to give up Facebook, Twitter or blogging, which would you choose and why? Facebook. I don't care who's doing what on Mafia Wars or Farmville. With blogging I get to connect with someone's thoughts — even if it is my friends who just post baby pictures. Blogging is more a window into someone's life. And I've met so many great people through Twitter that while I think I could give it up, I don't want to.
    6. Does being in PR affect your response to receiving PR pitches for your blog? I think I vet through the spam more. I am fairly liberal with giveaways and stuff but a lot of the link requests or crappy product review pitches I just roll my eyes at.
    7. What's your favorite recipe to prepare for company or to bring to a party? I am almost always trying something new. I read a lot of food blogs so I will star a recipe and when an event comes up I will choose something from my folder and enjoy the moment. Right now though my favorite "wow" factor recipe is lava cakes. I stumbled upon the recipe when I was reading GOOP (you know Gwyneth Paltrow's venture into the online world that no one quite gets) and it is really simple, but definitely awesome. Who doesn't like a lava cake?
    8. What do you envision your life being like in five years? I wish I knew. I applied for an MBA program that I'd start in January.  So hopefully in 5 years I have an MBA. I know that my puppy will be getting gray and probably won't be much of a puppy anymore and my husband will be getting established in his law career. But as for me? I am kind of clueless. I know that kids are in our future and I do want them. So hopefully we have a kid, and I am working at a job I am happy at. I would like to think that is my own consulting firm, but I am not sure.

Thanks so much for answering my nosy questions, Natalie! I'm looking forward to continuing to read your blog from here on out.

When my interviewer sends me questions and eventually publishes my answers, I'll be sure to share the URL.

Also, there's still plenty of time to enter to win a $25 GiveCard. Just comment here.
