  • Average Jane Shares the Blog Love

    Iloveyouthismuchaward_2

I received this award from both Liz and Suzanne, so it’s time I passed it along. It hasn’t been that long since I did a similar award, so this time I’m going to pick a new group for recognition.

As before, I’m going to mention my blog feed total, which now stands at 686. This obviously means that I’ll be leaving a lot of great blogs off the list.

In no particular order, here are some bloggers I love to read:
    Monkey in a Suit

    Schmutzie
    and her husband, The Palinode
    Mocha Momma
    Joolie
    Sarcastic Mom
    Laurie Ruettimann

    Miss Zoot

    Pesky’Apostrophe

    Grace Davis

    M. Giant

    Eden Kennedy

Okay, that’s more than ten, so I’ll stop now. I just have so many wonderful blogs in my feed reader. Check out the whole list sometime.

One of these days, I’ll have to do lists of the great cartoonists, artists, business bloggers, cooking bloggers, photographers, political bloggers, etc. that I read regularly.

Now go nominate some of your favorites!

  • Average Jane’s Anti-SATC Meme

I always liked Sex and the City just fine, but I’m not particularly excited about the movie. Thus, Suzanne’s meme seemed like a good one for me:

"As the Sex and the City Movie comes to theaters near you and
there is no escape from its press coverage, I present a meme for
feisty, spirited women who share our lives and support one another, yet
are also slovenly and/or miserly (or is it practical?)."

What’s the cheapest pair of shoes you own?: All of my shoes are cheap. I know I have a pair that cost $4 at Target, but I can’t remember which ones they are.

What’s your favorite piece of jewelry, if you own any?: I like my ridiculously dated-looking gold wedding band from 1994. I have much nicer jewelry than that, but the plainer gold band is more "me."

What’s your favorite t-shirt?: I care a great deal for my Fussy "I thought it was a porn site too, but
    I was typing it wrong"
shirt. I also like the "I am the Internet" shirt I bought from W00t the other day.

If you could wear jeans every day, would you? I can and I do.

Do you comb your hair every day? Yes. My hair is probably the most high-maintenance thing about me.

  • Average Jane Remembers Mama Voting

I received this from Suzanne and thought it sounded like a good post for Mother’s Day.

First, take a look at I Remember Mama Voting, then think about your own mother or mother figure and how she may or may not have influenced your political views and your attitudes about voting and civic participation.  Next, write about how you remember this important woman in your life in relation to politics.

Please share the I Remember Mama Voting link in your post about your mom and politics, http://acorn.org/moms.

If you’ve got blogger friends who you’d like to also try this meme, then please do so.  Please tell your readers about this meme.

    * * * * *

My great-grandmother ran her town’s newspaper along with her husband, and was one of the first women in that town to drive a car. My grandmother was also in the newspaper business and struggled with editors who said that it was okay that her male co-workers made more money than she did because she had a husband who worked.

Thus, it’s no surprise that my mother ended up being an important role model for me when it came to being engaged with politics and social justice.

I have lots of early memories of accompanying my mother to the voting booth on election day and watching her pull the levers for the candidates of her choice. She always said it was important to do your homework and make choices based on everything you could find out. (However, I also remember her saying that it was too difficult to research all of the judges, so she always voted not to retain any of them.)

My mother and I both ended up registering as Democrats. She once told me that she only did so to annoy her father. I took the choice much more seriously than that and registered the way my 18-year-old conscience led me. More than 20 years later, that decision continues to reflect my political attitudes.

Thanks to the influence of my parents, I vote every time I get the opportunity. This year, I caucused for the first time – and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

I may have some doubts about the power of a single voice in our electoral system, as did my mother and grandmothers before me, but I share their belief that it’s still important to make yourself heard. They taught me that it’s up to all of us to try to make this country work for everyone.

    I can’t wait until November.

  • Average Jane Appreciates Her Readers

    Rad_icon_2008_brittbox_3_2
The Other Mother came up with the brilliant idea of declaring today Blog Reader Appreciation Day. There are options for doing the appreciating:

    1. The Madonna Option:
Write a post thanking your readers for putting up with your foibles,
mistakes, and eccentricities (a list) and being loyal to you (your
      blog) no matter what.
    2. Write a tribute to your 5 most avid commenters.
    3. Share some of your favorite comments ever posted to your blog.
    4. Giveaways and free prizes to loyal/lucky readers are always fun.
    5. Thank your readers in any way you want.

I’m going to go with #2. I love the idea of recognizing people who have been reading for a long time and deserve special mention. Most notably, all of the readers I’m about to feature have been commenting almost as long as I’ve had my blog, yet I’ve never met any of them in person.

    • Keith of The Sturdy Soapbox and Sandal and Soxer has been reading my blog since the very beginning and still comments almost daily. Back when I was still hanging onto my anonymity, I accidentally outed myself to him via Facebook, so now we’re friends there and on Flickr, too. Someday I hope to go to the UK and meet Keith face to face. In the meantime, I’ll just say "hi" from here.
    • Rozanne of Ragwater, Bitters and Blue Ruin is another commenter from way back. She takes beautiful photos and her writing is always entertaining.
    • Joolie of Oh, My Stars and Garters is not only a long-time reader, she is also an artist who has  supplied me with my favorite note cards and t-shirt. Anyone who has a pet cactus named Mr. Pointy is okay by me. I’m totally looking her up if I ever manage to get to Austin for SXSW.
    • Suzanne from Suburban Lesbian and I have been reading each other’s blogs for so long that it feels like we’ve met. Perhaps someday our paths will cross in real life.
    • Stacie, formerly of Raspberry Latte, still keeps up with my blog even though she has shuttered her own. You can still find her on Etsy.

It was really fun going back through my posts from 2004 to see who’s stuck around all this time.

I’m thrilled to have all of my readers coming by to keep up with the mundane details of my home life and hobbies. Whether you were my friend B.B. (before blogging), I met you through one of the many groups of bloggers to which I belong, or you just found me randomly, thanks so much for making this whole thing so much fun!

  • A Bunch of Stuff About Average Jane

In the interest of sparing my brain for more pressing tasks, I’m cheating with a meme today. I lifted it from Sarah.

    1. If you were to attend a costume party tonight, as what or whom would you go? Well, considering that I wouldn’t have time to buy a new costume, I guess I could dress up as Sharon Osbourne again.
    2. What are your choice of toppings on a hamburger? And do you prefer gas or
    charcoal grilling?
Lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard and pickles. I like both gas and charcoal grilling, but gas seems a little cleaner.
    3. You are chosen to have lunch with the President. The condition is you only get to ask one question. What do you ask? May I be excused?
    4. It’s your first day of vacation, what are you doing? Lying around and reading.
    5. What is your concession stand must-have at the movies?
    Twizzlers
    6. How long was it from ‘the first date’ until the proposal of marriage? How long until the wedding? Proposal was about two years after our first date. Our wedding was maybe six months after that in Las Vegas.
    7. What is one quality that you really appreciate in a person?
    Sense of humor
    8. Everyone hears discussions that they consider boring. What topic can put you to sleep quicker than any other? Anything about money.
    9. If you had to have the same topping on your vanilla ice cream for the rest of your life, what topping would you choose? Chocolate syrup
    10. What food item would need to be removed from the market altogether in order for you to live a healthier, longer life? Hot dogs

Feel free to tag yourself for this meme if you need something to write about today. If you do, leave a comment and let me know.

Incidentally, you may notice that I finally put my Lijit search wijit back. Ever since I switched to an advanced template on Typepad, it’s been gone. They were nice enough to walk my ignorant self through the process of putting it back and it worked just perfectly. Thanks, Lijit!

Here are the rules of the meme:

  • Somebody Thinks Average Jane is Excellent

    Excellentblogthumbnail

Jenny on the Spot was kind enough to nominate me for the Excellent Blog Award. Actually, she did it more than a month ago, so I know I look like a lazy ingrate waiting this long to accept. I apologize for that.

As part of the terms of accepting this award, I must pass on the rules:

    1. Identify the originator of this award, and link so she can get her well-deserved traffic. It’s Kayla at Project Mommy. Great idea, Kayla!
    2. Pass on at least 10 Excellent Blog Awards.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned my RSS feed totals lately, but I’m up to 639. That makes it quite a challenge to choose award winners, so I’m going to limit myself to people I’ve met in person. Even so, I’m sure to leave out a bunch of great blogs, so please don’t be offended if you’re not on the list.

Without further ado and in no particular order, here are my Excellent Blog Award picks:

It’s worth pointing out that with the exception of two people on the list, I met everyone else at one of the BlogHer Conferences. If you’re trying to talk yourself into going, there’s the best reason I can think of!

  • Average Jane’s Personality

    My Personality

    Neuroticism
    30
    Extraversion
    53
    Openness to Experience
    38
    Agreeableness
    60
    Conscientiousness
    33

You do not experience strong, irresistible cravings and consequently do not find yourself tempted to overindulge, however you don’t usually get angry too easily but some things can annoy you. You get overwhelmed by too much noise and commotion and do not like thrill-seeking activities. You tend not to express your emotions openly and are sometimes not even aware of your own feelings. You dislike confrontations and are perfectly willing to compromise or to deny your own needs in order to get along with others, however you feel superior to those around you and sometimes tend to be seen as arrogant by other people. You take your time when making decisions and will deliberate on all the possible consequences and alternatives.
    Take a Personality Test now.

Hmm, not exactly on the mark, but it nailed a few things.
