  • Average Jane vs. the Crud

So I have this horrible viral something-something that keeps producing exciting new symptoms every day. I was okay with the laryngitis, I could handle blowing my nose hundreds of times a day (as long as I had petroleum jelly handy), I could deal with the sore throat and the cough. Then I woke up this morning with every sinus feeling as though someone had tried to inflate my head with a bicycle pump.

When I say my head ached, I mean every part of my entire head had pain lancing through it, including my eyes. It made me understand why someone might consider trephination.

I chose to forego drilling a hole in my skull in favor of making a doctor’s appointment. Two Tylenol Cold capsules plus two Advils cranked the pain down enough that I could see to drive. My doctor took one look at me and said, "Well, I see you have the crud that’s going around."

Not very scientific, but she had a point. I didn’t expect her to be able to do very much for me, but I figured she could at least give me something to relieve the pressure in my head.

Within about an hour, I was back home with some heavy-duty prescription medication, almost every chicken-oriented variety of Progresso soup available, and a Starbucks cafe mocha (’cause the pharmacy is right next to the Starbucks stand at my grocery store).

Now that I’m all dosed up and fed, I figured it was time to do my daily NaBloPoMo duty.

I don’t think I’ll do more individual posts about my trip, so check out my photos on Flickr. View them individually to see my comments. I’ll put more up once I’ve developed the ones from the waterproof disposable camera and gotten my sister’s photos.

Enjoy the rest of your Friday. I think I’ll take a nap now.

  • Average Jane Misses the Tropics

This was the view out the back door of our hotel room for four days. We’d sit on this patio and have breakfast most mornings, watching the little lizards and finches that lived in the plants.

Now I’m home where it’s 32 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Ugh.

  • Very Quiet Average Jane

My trip to Jamaica went splendidly until Monday afternoon. That’s when I started to realize that I was probably catching the upper respiratory infection that had been dogging my sister since well before we left for the trip. By Tuesday, my voice was raspy and I’d developed a cough and a sore throat.

Today, the laryngitis has reduced my voice to a whisper and I’m still waiting for my right ear to unplug from the last leg of the flight (although it was rather nice to have the sounds of my husband’s snoring blocked so effectively last night).

I’ll try to track down the cable to my camera tonight and start posting my photos tomorrow.

For now, it’s off to my new office to figure out where to park and where I sit. Wish me luck!

  • Average Jane Returns Home

Today’s our travel day back from Jamaica. We won’t be in until late evening, so this is one last placeholder post in case I’m too exhausted to post when I get home.

Originally, we had made reservations to come back on Monday, but after my sister and I discussed it further, we decided to change our flight and resort reservation to leave on Tuesday. I don’t know how my sister managed it, but we have seats in first class on both legs of the return trip. Woohoo!

I may not have photos up tomorrow, but I’ll definitely have trip stories to share. Until then…

  • Average Jane Jumps Off a Cliff

I’m killing time on Sunday morning before a yoga class while my sister scuba dives, so I thought I’d nix this day’s pre-post and write a real Jamaica post.

When my husband woke me up on Friday morning, half an hour before my sister was due to arrive, I was so exhausted that I almost didn’t care whether I went out of town or not. I’d stayed up until the wee hours finishing work, packing, etc. and got less than three hours of sleep.

Vital stuff I forgot to pack:

    • My contact lens case
    • Sunglasses

Once we hit the road and had some coffee, I did much better. We flew to Memphis, had a brief layover that allowed time to grab some Starbucks, and then we flew directly to Montego Bay, Jamaica. I meant to sleep during the flight, but that never happened.

When we got through customs and to our resort’s check-in desk at the airport, we quickly realized our reservations were completely goofed up. We’d originally planned to come back on Monday, and apparently when they cancelled and re-booked so that we could stay until Tuesday, the travel agency ended up booking us into the resort in Ocho Rios, not the one in Negril where we wanted to go. We sat patiently for a good 45 minutes waiting for things to get sorted out and eventually we ended up where we had meant to.

We took an hour-and-a-half cab ride to the resort and the cab driver was obsessed with plumbing our knowledge of reggae music. "Do you know this one?" he’d ask, and play yet another unfamiliar reggae song with inappropriate lyrical content. Eventually he got around to Bob Marley and, of course we’d heard those songs. After that, we got a constant stream of American and British pop songs done reggae style. By then the driver had apparently decided we weren’t any fun.

When we got to the resort, we were greeted with chilled, jasmine-scented washcloths and glasses of champagne. That was more like it! Our room was spacious and comfortable (no TV – yay!) and we had a beautiful patio. It’s not right on the beach, but it’s not far away. At night, there’s a chorus of tree frogs chirping and the stars are very visible in the sky.

On Saturday, we started the day with a continental breakfast on the patio, then a little walk on the beach. The wedding was at 1:00 p.m. and I took lots of photos with the bride’s camera. After that, we had cake and champagne, then lunched with the couple and the groom’s family before heading back to our room to prepare for a trip to Rick’s Cafe.

At Rick’s, I was hoping to name-drop my friend, Gary, to the manager, because Gary did a lot of the logo and design work for the club. I never got around to that, though, because we found something much more fun to do.

The club’s main feature is cliff-diving, both by professionals and patrons (at your own risk, of course). There were some low cliffs (I’d say around 12 feet up) and I just jumped off the edge the first time. Even though I was holding my nose, my hand came loose and I got an enormous amount of extremely salty water driven into my sinuses. One ear hurt so much that I kept tapping it to make sure I could still hear. I coughed and snorked for a good 15 minutes before I’d even consider jumping again.

While I recovered, I watched people swing over the water on a rope suspended from a crane. My sister decided to do that and I had to admit that it looked like fun, even though I was a little gun-shy from my previous dip into the water. Finally, she shamed me into going (pointing out all the little kids who had to be lifted onto the rope but still did the drop fearlessly). In fact, she said this post should be titled, "Average Jane Grows a Pair," but I think she misapprehends my hesitation.

I swung off the rope into the water a few times before it started to get dark. Then we went and drank Red Stripe beer, sitting at a table in a shallow pool. I’ll post photos of everything when I get back.

The plans for Sunday and Monday are still pretty open, but will definitely include lots of beach time. So far my sunscreen has done its job, but I’m not going to push my luck.

  • Make Granola with Average Jane

My aunt used to make big batches of granola and give it to everyone as Christmas gifts. If you've never had homemade granola, you don't know what you're missing! It's delicious by itself or eaten with milk as a cereal.

There are a LOT of ingredients and you'll find that it is not inexpensive to make, but it's very tasty.

    Ingredients

    Granola

    Mix:
    4 cups rolled oats
1 1/2 cups unsweetened coconut shavings
    1 cup sunflower seeds
    1/2 cup sesame seeds
    1 cup wheat germ
    1 cup chopped walnuts
    1 cup roasted soybeans
    1/2 cup bran
    1/2 cup flax seeds
Anything else that sounds good (I like pumpkin seeds!)

    Heat:
    1/2 cup vegetable oil
    1/2 cup honey
    1/2 tsp. vanilla

Mix all ingredients together and spread on oiled cookie sheets. Bake for 15 minutes at 325 degrees Fahrenheit, turning every 3 minutes. After granola has been removed from the oven, add 1 cup of raisins.

  • Average Jane Posts from Afar

I’m not going to lie to you – I did a bunch of posts in advance to cover NaBloPoMo while I’m on vacation. There should be Internet access at the resort, but even I’m not so obsessed with being online that I’d choose it over lying on a beach.

Here are a few links to things that you might find interesting:

Update: Jamaica is beautiful! I’m heading to my friend’s wedding in about an hour, after which we will all sit on the beach drinking various concoctions of rum and fruit juices until we get hungry or bored and decide to eat or do some kind of activity. Ahhhh….

  • Average Jane Takes Off

Today’s the day I head out on vacation. I got almost no sleep because it took me forever to get through all of the stuff on my list yesterday.

Before I go, I want to congratulate Me on the birth of her new daughter. She arrived early, but she’s doing well.

    Have a great Friday!

  • Average Jane Is Not Ready

The Countdown to Jamaica has begun and obstacles are piling up.

First of all, I don’t have any summer clothes. Well, okay, I have a few pairs of sandals and a couple of skirts, but I have no shorts and only one ugly swimsuit. Did I mention it’s impossible to buy summer clothes in the midwest in November? I’m going to try to hit a year-round swimsuit store sometime today, but I really don’t have time.

Speaking of things I don’t have time for, I also need to:

    • Put in a day’s work on two copywriting projects,
    • Go to the credit union for some traveling money,
    • Split, grind up and portion out five doses of the cat’s stomach medicine so my husband can keep him alive while I’m gone,
    • Buy Ziploc bags to pack my toiletries,
    • Meet up with my AdvoCare lady to get nutritional supplements to take with me,
    • Attend a luncheon,
    • Go to my weekly vocal lesson,
    • Write blog posts for the next 4-5 days in case I can’t or don’t want to post from Jamaica, and
    • Oh yeah, pack my suitcase.

An unwelcome wrinkle in the whole situation is that one of my cats escaped outside yesterday and injured her paw. I’m trying to decide if she needs to go to the vet or if it’s minor enough that it’ll heal on its own. I guess my husband can always monitor the situation while I’m gone and take her in if necessary.

I have about 14 hours between now and the time my sister comes to pick me up. If I really focus, maybe I can complete my list, take the cat to the vet and do some quick shopping. Wish me luck!

  • Average Jane Gets Metaphysical

You may see a few more "cheat" posts like this while I prepare for my move out of my office and my trip to Jamaica! Found via Divine Reality.

    You are the Hanged Man

    Self-sacrifice, Sacrifice, Devotion, Bound.

With the Hanged Man there is often a sense of fatalism, waiting for something to happen. Or a fear of
loss from a situation, rather than gain.

The Hanged Man is perhaps the most fascinating card in the deck. It reflects the story of Odin who offered himself as a sacrifice in order to gain knowledge. Hanging from the world tree, wounded by a spear, given no bread or mead, he hung for nine days. On the last day, he saw on the ground runes that had fallen from the tree, understood their meaning, and, coming down, scooped them up for his own. All knowledge is to be found in these runes.

The Hanged Man, in similar fashion, is a card about suspension, not life or death. It signifies selflessness, sacrifice and prophecy. You make yourself vulnerable and in doing so, gain illumination. You see the world differently, with almost mystical insights.
