Why Average Jane Loves Her Husband

Reason #5,438,256

Yesterday as we were on our way out to dinner, my husband darted over to his car to get something.  When he got into my car, he handed this to me:

It was the first perfect fall leaf he’d found this year and he thought I’d enjoy it. How sweet is that?! It seems the man who used to be puzzled about why I wasn’t more excited to get jewelry has me figured out after all.

I’ll have to think of a way to preserve it now that I’ve scanned it.  What do you think, should I iron it between sheets of waxed paper, seal it between two sheets of clear, sticky plastic or laminate it?

Related update:  BoingBoing had a link to this how-to about folding maple leaves into roses. Aren’t they pretty? I might have to try it.

Wax paper. That always works. I’m not sure about the other options. Have you tried them?

You can get a spray preservative from an arts/crafts store. It will probably make the leaf nice and shiny.

Yeah, like Yvonne said–wax paper and an iron–just like you did in kindergarten. I’m a fall color freak and I ironed about a dozen leaves last fall. I’ve still got them, and they retained their color remarkably well. Actually, come to think of it, I think it was two falls ago.
Thanks for the link to the mapleleaf roses. Cool idea!

Maybe I’m completely whacked but I’m going to try that!

Even though I would probably like to learn about the newest stuff out there craft-wise, I’d want to reminisce my childhood and go with the wax paper. I’m sappy like that.
It’s a beautiful leaf and your husband is wonderful for that.

I would recommend the old-fashioned “stick it between the pages of an old book” routine. My wife gave me a small flower to wear in my lapel on one of our first dates, which was to a mutual friend’s wedding. I put it in an old book of mine. Years later my wife was flipping through the book and saw the flower. She instantly remembered where it was from, and it was a good moment. Someday one of our daughters will likely find the same flower in the same book, and will ask us where it’s from. That will be a good moment too.
