I spend a lot of time on the computer. A lot. And lately I've been noticing my face doing something weird from time to time. I'll be reading something online or playing a game and all of a sudden, I'm grimacing as if I'm in pain.
It took a while for me to stop and think about it, but when I finally did I realized that what was actually happening is that I was squinting.
Yes, as though this latest birthday has flipped another switch in the age-related breakdown control panel, I think the time has come for me to get…reading glasses. [Heavy sigh.]
My eyesight is absolutely terrible. I've been severely nearsighted and astigmatic since childhood. Without my glasses or contacts, I can only focus about an inch in front of my eyes. If I try to read a book sans correction, my nose hits the page before the words get clear.
That's really been my only problem until now. However, I've known this was coming because my eye doctor has been almost gleefully foreshadowing my eventual need for reading glasses and/or bifocals ever since I turned forty. He and my dentist should get together and have a doomsaying party.
So I've made an appointment with the eye doctor to see what needs to be done. I don't want to run around with reading glasses on a beaded chain like someone's granny, but I may have no other choice. At least it's better than developing new forehead wrinkles from squinching up my face. That's what I tell myself anyway.
